How do I know if I'm INFJ or INFP?

Question · Updated 2026-05-17 · By

The short answer

INFJ and INFP share three letters but lead with completely different dominant functions. INFJs lead with Ni (Introverted Intuition) — pattern-finding that produces a coherent vision. INFPs lead with Fi (Introverted Feeling) — values-checking that filters everything through personal meaning. The split is huge in practice.

Signal: how you make decisions

INFJs decide by integrating multiple inputs into a unified pattern, then checking it against their feeling. INFPs decide by checking against their values first, then figuring out how to make it work practically. INFJs lead with the picture; INFPs lead with the principle.

Signal: how you describe your inner life

INFJs describe their inner life in patterns, themes, and visions ('I keep seeing this same thing across different contexts...'). INFPs describe theirs in feelings, values, and meanings ('this feels right because it lines up with what I believe'). Same kind of richness, different language.

Signal: how you handle conflict

INFJs handle conflict by reading the other person's underlying intent and trying to address that — the conflict-as-text, the intent-as-subtext. INFPs handle conflict by checking against their own values first ('does this violate something I care about?') then engaging from that position.

The single tell

When you imagine a perfect world: does your mental image lead with how it works (systems, relationships, dynamics) — INFJ — or how it feels (the experience of being in it, the values it embodies) — INFP? INFJs build systems; INFPs build atmospheres.
